Kennesaw is the new Midtown

June 25, 2008

When we bought our house in Kennesaw last summer, this became our catch phrase.  But lately, it seems that the more we say it, the more it becomes true.

It started as basically a joke - a way of mocking ourselves for being so "un-cool" as to live in the suburbs, when we were Midtown/Decatur types at heart.  That's where we had spent our younger, childless years, and where we still spend a lot of our free time.  In Midtown, we were walking distance from Piedmont Park, a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall grocery store, parades on Peachtree Street, and so much more.  In Decatur, we could walk to (or more importantly walk home from) Eddie's Attic and a handful of other bars and restaurants, the Decatur MARTA Station, and my office.

To get almost anywhere from our house in Kennesaw, we have to get in the car and drive.  Instead of neighborhoods, there are subdivisions.  Instead of Manuel's and Eddie's Attic, we have TGI Fridays.  But the more we get to know our little corner of suburbia, the more we like it.   We've found some local non-chain restaurants, some interesting shops (that aren't in Town Center Mall), and some great people.  So now, anytime we see something trendy or progressive or cutting-edge around here, we exclaim, "Kennesaw is the new Midtown!"  We're actually starting to believe it.

We didn't choose the suburbs just because we have kids now.  Our jobs are both here, which means a lot to our quality of life.  And housing prices played a big part too.  Under different circumstances, we would definitely consider living in the city.  Or at least closer.

Are you happy with your part of town?  Or do you think the grass is greener on the other side of the perimeter?
