I Idbid, do you Idbid?

September 08, 2008

I was at a book signing this weekend at the Beehive Co-Op in Buckhead (very cute store, more on that later), and was fortunate enough to win one of the door prizes.

It was an Idbid toy.  Idbids LLC is an Atlanta based company that teaches kids:  "iddy biddy steps make a biggie big difference in keeping our Earth happy, healthy and green.

There are three Idbid toys all with different personalities and environmental concerns.  Scout, the Cloud Idbid, is concerned with the air we breathe and keeping it clean.  Lola, the flower Idbid, is the flower, plant and tree expert.  And finally, Waverly, the water drop, is the Idbid concerned with preserving water: oceans, seas, rivers and lakes.  Each toy 'starter kit comes with one of the Idbid character soft toys, a cinch sack backpack, a story book and a field guide.

The minute I walked in the door, both the boys (ages 7 and 3) were excited to find out what it was.  We have Waverly and he has to take turns sleeping with each boy (and their Webkinz) every other night.  The boys, especially the three year old, love him!

We do try to teach the boys about being Earth friendly.  We use reusable shopping bags, they have bento box school lunch boxes, we recycle and we try our best.  But sometimes, parents (like me) need outside help to get the point across.  The Idbid field guide is a great way to help get the kids thinking about being Earth Friendly.

We read through the field guide and talked about the activities (or chores of a sort) that kids can do to help keep the environment things like turning off the water when they brush their teeth, coloring on both sides of a piece of paper and only putting dirty clothes (not clean ones) in the clothes hamper (my boys need help here!).  Things that I try and drive home everyday.  The field guide has little footprints on it once one of the kids is earth friendly, we color in the footprint.  Then, when all the footprints are colored in, I can go on line and print up a certificate for the boys.

It really is a very ingenious way to not just teach the kids about being earth friendly, but shows them how to be earth friendly and keeps it fun at the same time.
