Best Bedtime books
November 17, 2008
Bedtime is just the best time for sitting down and reading with the
kids. I can remember my mom reading to the three of us up until I was
in 7th or 8th grade. Granted she was reading books like "The Hobbit,"
"The Lord of the Rings," and "A Wrinkle in Time," but she would still
read to us almost every night before bed.
Now it's something I love to do with the boys. Josh is old enough that
we sometimes share the "reading" part but it's still nice to have a
night time cuddle and read with him before he goes off to bed. And Sam
just loves to be read to... loves looking at pictures and is starting
to become interested in books.
Our family favorite bedtime books:
1. Good Night Gorilla. So simple, yet the kids love it. This is one Sam will "read" to me.
2. Good Night Moon. Of course. And fun to find the little mouse hiding on each page.
3. Sing-Along Song. I think this is my new favorite book. Catchy sing-songy text and beautiful pictures.
4. Fox In Socks.
Really anything by Dr. Seuss is great, but both the boys love this
one. I've read it so many times I think I could do it in my sleep!
5. The Boxcar Children series. These are chapter books and a bit more advanced and Josh, who is in 2nd grade, and I read them together.
6. The Magic Tree House
series. Wonderful books for beginning chapter books and great bedtime
stories too. Josh has been reading them since kindergarten. And while
he has moved beyond the "reading level" for the books, the subject
matter of the books still captures his interest.
These are some of our current favorites, and they do change from time
to time. We're always looking for good bedtime books, so I'd love to
hear some of your favorites. Please share!
