Getting In Shape With Kids in Tow.

January 09, 2009

It seems every year I have a resolution or goal to get back in shape.  I start the year off with good intentions, but by the time February rolls around the winter blues have set in and my goals are forgotten.  This year, though, I'm putting this out there so I have to do it.  I'm doing the "Couch to 5K" program.  I want to run in a 5K race this year so I'm determined to get through the 9 week plan.

Of course finding time to train for it can be tough.  I'm lucky enough to have a treadmill at home I can use, but not every one does.  The challenge is either finding a "mommy and me" fitness class, a gym with child care options or a friend to trade off babysitting with!

I've been trying to find out information on "Mommy and Me" fitness classes or yoga classes in the Atlanta area and I have not had much luck!  If any of you know of any or run any, please email me as I'd love to feature something on the subject here on Being Savvy Atlanta.

I have found a a couple things, though.

Stroller Strides is a total fitness program for new mom's that they can do with their babies.  There are even programs for expectant mothers. Exercises include Power Walking and body toning exercises using the stroller and tubing.  Stroller Strides fitness programs meet at local parks and malls.  Some of the Atlanta Locations include: Cumberland Mall, Tolleson Park, Piedmont Park, Chastain Park and Perimeter Mall.   Classes and times vary from location to location.  Check the website for class details in your area.

Oh Baby! Fitness offers several classes in and around Atlanta.  They have pregnancy classes and "mommy and me" classes.  Their offerings look quite extensive -- offerings include: fitness, yoga, water aerobics, pilates, toning and more for both pregnancy and "mommy and me."

Gold's Gym, L.A. Fitness and the YMCA also have locations all over the Atlanta area and offer child care options.  Some carry an additional cost and child care times may vary, so check your local facility for details.

And if you really can't bring yourself to join a gym or formal fitness program, get together with your friends and take a stroll around your local park or trade off babysitting with friends or finds a Mom's Morning Out Program for "child free" work outs!

Good luck and here's hoping we all achieve this years resolution to work out and get in shape!

Great resource. I am new to the Atlanta area and really needed this info! THANK YOU! Also, Jazzercise offers some childcare depending on the need and varies from location to location and they are relatively inexpensive.
