Math Can Be Fun - Local Math Enhancers

February 10, 2009

I know, for me, math is not my strongest subject! My seven year old does better than I do!  It does make "helping" with homework interesting!

But, since he's fascinated by math, it's fun to go out and practice around town.  It also helps get my four year old prepared as well!

If you're looking for some fun things to do that encourage basic math skills, look no further!

Holiday Theatre

December 18, 2008

When we lived in England, there were Panto 's going on all over the country this time of year. I vaguely remember seeing similar type performances when I was younger, but haven't seen much of them around these days. But there are still lots of holiday performances going on! Christmas at Sweet Apple : Theatre on the Square, Marietta. Collection of holiday stores from Celestone Sibley  Read more...

Favorite Songs of the Season

December 12, 2008

So, are your kids singing Christmas songs nonstop? I sure know mine are. In fact, we had to tell the kids that The Christmas Carol Police don't allow Christmas songs to be sung after New Year and before Thanksgiving or we'd hear them all year round. We don't do it to be curmudgeonly, we want to keep the songs and Christmas movies special. If you sing them year round, they just aren't  Read more...

Put Your Dancing Shoes On

September 29, 2008

There's no doubt that kids love to dance and listen to music.  Not only is it fun to let your hair down and cut a rug with your preschooler, it's great exercise and helps develop coordination.  And there is some research to suggest that music makes your kids smarter.  You could sign up for a dancing class at your neighborhood community center or music and play place like the Little Gym ,  Read more...

We have a lot to do in the next two weeks: Countdown to the first day of school

July 28, 2008

Can you hear the clock ticking? It's counting down the days (only 14 now, for us) until the start of school. Tick...tock...we're almost there! You've probably noticed your neighborhood school getting spiffed up and the enormous displays of school supplies at all the stores. And am I the only one who feels compelled to buy many boxes of crayons, whether we need them or not, just because they  Read more...

Teaching Children Music: At Home and Away

July 14, 2008

Today I'm super-pleased to bring you a guest post from children's music writer Stefan Shepherd. Stefan writes Zooglobble , a blog about kids and family music, and is a co-creator of the Fids and Kamily Music Awards . When I write about kids music, I usually focus on recorded music for kids. But I'm a firm believer that it's important to spend time making music with your family. I'm not  Read more...

Minivan Rotation: Summer Playlist

July 01, 2008

Once upon a time, in the not-too-distant past, I wrote mainly about kids' music. In my quest for kids' music that was also enjoyable for grown-ups , I accumulated piles of CDs, DVDs, and mp3s. It would be my dream to have every kids' music track in our collection sorted and tagged, so I could easily pull a playlist of songs about school or food or art or dogs. That would have made today's  Read more...

Pre-School Extra-Curriculars

June 17, 2008

Looking at the incredible variety of options for "extra-curricular" activities for pre-schoolers nearly always sends me into a "When I was a kid, things were different..." rant. I'm amazed at the lessons, classes, sports, and other activities are available for children as young as two. I've tried to make sure my own children are able to try a variety of things without feeling pressured or  Read more...

Live Music for Kids in the ATL

May 30, 2008

Maybe my expectations were too high coming in, but I've been a bit disappointed in the music offerings for children in and around Atlanta . We love taking our kids to see and hear live music, whether it's a local symphony concert in the park, an outdoor music festival, or a family-friendly folk-rock-pop concert. Having followed dozens of kindie rock artists over the last several years Dan  Read more...

Five Best Ways to Enjoy Centennial Olympic Park

May 15, 2008

One of the most incredible changes to the city that we saw when returning here after a 10-year absence was the development of Centennial Olympic Park. Here are my five favorite ways to enjoy the park with the kids. What are yours? 1. When wet. The Fountain of Rings the centerpiece of the park is a great place to cool off on a hot day or to just sit and watch the water show. The  Read more...
